Your Newborn and Medi-Cal: Simpler Than You Fear
If you had Medi-Cal at delivery, your baby is typically covered from birth. Here is how to make it official without losing sleep you cannot spare.

The rule that protects your baby
Babies born to mothers with Medi-Cal are typically covered automatically from birth, for their first year. The coverage exists from day one; the paperwork just needs to catch up. Do not delay checkups waiting for a card.
Making it official
- Report the birth to the county so your baby gets their own Medi-Cal number
- Watch the mail for your baby: county letters and eventually a card
- Choose a pediatric provider: you can pick Health Service Alliance as your baby medical home
- If any paperwork confuses you, bring it to any of our front desks and we will handle it together

Very likely yes: children qualify at higher income limits than adults. Apply for the baby directly, and we will help.
Can my baby be seen before the card arrives?
Yes. Coverage typically exists from birth even while paperwork processes, and we would rather see your baby on schedule than wait on an envelope.
When is the first checkup?
Typically within the first week of life, then a front-loaded schedule through the first year. Our pediatric team will map it out at the first visit.
