Lost Your Medi-Cal? Here Is the Way Back
Most coverage losses are paperwork, not eligibility, and paperwork can be fixed. Here is what to do this week, and how to stay seen meanwhile.
Written by the Health Service Alliance care team. Updated July 2026.
Why coverage usually gets lost
The most common reasons are missed renewal packets, a moved address the county did not have, or income paperwork that did not arrive on time. Actual loss of eligibility is less common than loss by lapse. That distinction matters, because lapses are fixable, often quickly.
Your first moves
- Find the county letter if you have it: it says why coverage ended and what the deadline to respond is
- If the loss was recent, ask about restoring coverage: responding within the window can reinstate you without a new application
- Update your address and contact info with the county so the next renewal actually reaches you
- If you need to reapply, our team helps you do it free, start to finish

Staying seen while you sort it out
Your care does not have to pause. The sliding-fee discount applies while your coverage is being restored, and any of our six centers can see you on it. If you have prescriptions that cannot lapse, tell us first: continuity of medication is the priority.
Staying covered next time
Renewal comes every year. Put the county mail on your fridge when it arrives, respond even if nothing changed, and keep your address current. If reading county mail feels overwhelming, bring it to any front desk and we will go through it with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Anything else? Call us, day or night.
How long do I have to fix a lapsed renewal?
The county letter states your window; acting within it is what makes reinstatement simple. Even past the window, reapplying is free and our team helps.
My prescriptions run out soon. What do I do?
Come in now. Tell the front desk about the medications first thing, and the team will work on keeping your treatment continuous while coverage is sorted.
Can my kids stay covered even if I lost mine?
Often yes: children have separate, higher limits. Bring everyone paperwork and we will check each person, not just the household.
Your family deserves good care, close to home.
Request an appointment or check your coverage. Medi-Cal and most plans accepted, and nobody is turned away for inability to pay.
